about buying gold from china/hong kong

hi there fellow ebayers. was just wondering if any of you from the uk had ever bought any gold jewellery from china or hong kong? is it safe to do so and do you think any of it is actually proper gold or this new stuff ive seen about that claims to be gold but its actually filled with "precious metal"? any answers gratefully received thanx.
